Abstract
One of the consequences of the IT revolution has been the proliferation of innovative payment systems. This paper provides a brief survey of the determinants of innovation and how they might apply to the introduction of non-bank payments systems. The role of network economies and interoperability standards is stressed. The paper concludes with some thoughts on micro payment systems.
